Why the hours are in railroad time

By Della Voss

Our hours say we open after the 8:14. People ask what that means, and the honest answer is that the 8:14 was a through freight that stopped running in 1971. We keep time by a train that has not come in more than 50 years.

The Bracken Valley and Northern ran right past the building, back when the building was a freight house and not a coffee bar. That is why we have a loading dock for a patio and a milepost for an address. When the line closed, the schedule stayed nailed to the wall. Nobody took it down, and after a while it was easier to keep time by it than to argue with it.

So we open after the 8:14 would have come through, which is to say a little after 7, Tuesday to Sunday. If you want the whole history, ask Theo. He has it memorized down to the rolling stock, and he is happy to deliver it at length, whether or not you have somewhere to be.
